Kalaivanar & T A Mathuram

Here are some of the interesting incidents from Kalaivanar's life

As much as his scene were well thought out and planned, his repartees in real life were sure-fire successes. Here are a few incidents to throw some light on a man who was alert and witty when caught unawares.

Once when he was acting on stage, instead of the dialogue "If I get angry I will knockout all your 32 teeth", he said "I'll knockout 31 teeth" by mistake. The other actor happy with the chance to pin down the quick witted krishnan at last, retorted "31 teeth???". Not to be outwitted, Krishnan replied "I want to you die of tooth ache so I have left one"

In another incident they had to wait because the railway gate was closed. When Krishnan asked the dirver why they were being delayed the driver replied "Kettu (gate) mudi irukanga. (is closed)" wittily he asked "yara kettu mudi irukanga". It is a pun with words - Kettu in tamil mean ask permission. So Kalaivar had replied "with whose permission have they closed the gate"

Not only was he witty, but was also a keen observer. He is supposed to have said that he was greatly impressed with the horse cart driver because they were the ones who always said "Munnuku va munnuku va" - Move forward Move forward. (Actually to create space for others in the cart).

Krishnan never failed to appreciate the virtues of others. In Nagercoil, one Doctor Noble was being honored in a function. Krishnan said that he was called Dr. Noble because there was No BILL in his clinic indicating the fact that Dr Noble treated the poor free of cost.

When Kalaivanar was asked for his age, he said ‘40’. The other person was shocked and asked "Just 40?" and Kalaivanar replied that he had stopped counting after 40.

Once, after boarding the train, Kalaivanar exclaimed that he had forgotten his cheque book, to which Mathuram enquired how he suddenly remembered it. Krishnan replied that the sound of the train "Chiku bukku...chikku bukku" reminded him of the cheque book.
